Ramsey ‘Still Working’ on Railroad Crosswalk Fix

Officials have been working with the county since last year on a project to help reduce the number of accidents at the railroad crossing on Main Street

Ramsey government and police officials are still working to make changes to the Main Street crosswalk that has been the site of several vehicular and pedestrian accidents over the past few years, Councilwoman Deirdre Dillon said at a borough council meeting last week.

Last October, the borough began working with the county on a plan that they said should reduce the number of accidents at the railroad crossing on Main Street.

The plan is two-fold, Dillon said. First, officials would create more prominent striping on the ground and bigger signs alerting drivers to stop before reaching the tracks.

Then, the borough would remove the second pedestrian crosswalk nearest the train tracks, in order to reduce the likelihood of cars having to stop close to or on the tracks in order to let passengers walk across.

According to Dillon’s update on the project at a borough council meeting last week, Ramsey has not yet received any permits from the county to begin work on the area. However, she said the police department is “still working” with county officials to get the project underway.
