Ramsey Relay for Life Meets $1 Million Mark, And Counting

The sixth annual relay is happening at the high school this weekend.

Organizers of the Ramsey Relay for Life started off planning for this year’s event with one big goal – reaching the $1 million mark.

Since its founding in 2008, the Ramsey Relay has raised over $870,000 for the for the American Cancer Society. From donations this year, the group wished to reach $1 million in donations.

With days to go until this weekend’s Relay, the goal is already being exceeded. As of Tuesday morning, Ramsey Relay had raised $146,604, putting the total raised over the event's six-year history comfortably over the $1 million goal. And, organizers say the fundraising isn’t over yet.

“It's exciting to know that Ramsey was able to raise over $1,000,000 in such a short amount of time,” Rich VanDerWall, the PR Chair for the Ramsey Relay, said.

According to VanderWall, he and many members of the community, are continuing to be inspired by Rich Lio, the former principal of Ramsey High School who helped bring Relay to the borough. Lio died last week.

"I'm excited for this year. I have been participating in Ramsey Relay for Life every year since Dani VanKampen and Rich Lio worked together to bring Relay to Ramsey," VanDerWall said. Raising $1 million, “was one of Rich Lio's goals,” he said.

The Relay itself is happening at Ramsey High School this Friday and Saturday. 76 teams have already signed up to participate. Organizers say it’s not too late to get involved.
