Postal Workers Pick Up 35,000 Pounds of Donated Food

Local mail carriers collected donations from homes in Ramsey and surrounding towns on one day last month.

A local food drive run by mail carriers in Ramsey and surrounding towns collected a record amount of donations for the Center for Food Action in Mahwah.

Each year, local post offices set aside a day in May and ask locals to leave food donations at their mailboxes. Mail carriers do the rest – picking up the food, pack it, and deliver it to the CFA. According to letter carrier John Dock, a Mahwah postal worker, this year’s food drive was the most successful one so far.

“The Mahwah, Ramsey, Allendale and Saddle River Letter Carriers collected a total of 35,000 pounds of food,” Dock said in a letter to Patch about this year’s drive, which happened on May 11. “This is up significantly from the 11,000 lbs from last year… [and] a 7,000 pound gain over our best year in 2008.”

The reason for the big increase, Dock said, was likely a donation of grocery bags from AARP that were distributed to every home in the four towns.

“We would like to thank our Postal Patrons who helped make this year's drive a huge success,” Dock said.
