After several discussions earlier this year about how to improve security at Ramsey High School, the district Board of Education has decided to hire a safety resource officer at the school.

The board approved a job description for the position at its meeting last Tuesday night.

According to the listing, which the board said it will start advertising for this week, the officer will patrol the inside and outside spaces of the school, assist police and other responders during emergencies, and manage the flow of visitors in and out of the building.

The officer’s job description also includes helping handle any disciplinary issues that may arise with students.

It also calls for the officer to attend “school functions including…athletic events, school dances,  [and other] school/community events on an as needed basis.”

In its applicants, the board is looking for a minimum of 20 years experience in law enforcement, the New Jersey Security Officer Registration Act certification, and good interpersonal skills.

The decision to hire a school security officer goes hand-in-hand with additional security measures being taken at all of the borough’s schools. Earlier this year, the board approved the installation of security cameras at the high school.
