Reading Comprehension and the Classroom

After a quarter of a century of working with children, we understand that the majority of problems that young students face at school can be traced back to their literacy skills, particularly, reading comprehension.

Reading comprehension is the ability to read a sentence and understand its meaning. It is the ability to look at words on page and quickly process the meaning, instruction, direction, idea, or inference.

It is not familiarity with a single word or it’s meaning, instead it’s the ability to recognize words, sentences, and paragraphs and make sense of the overall meaning.

Students who have a hard time making sense of instructions due to poor reading comprehension skills often earn poor grades. Often, this leads to frustration and an unwillingness to participate in class.

Many people misunderstand this and conclude that these children have major issues with understanding or an underlying comprehension problem. Rather, it means that by working on basic literacy skills, that child will improve skills such as word pronunciation and vocabulary development and improve his or her reading comprehension.
