Find out which restaurants in town are required to have gender-separated bathrooms, and why local singers should stay home at night.

Ramsey has 26 chapters of laws on the books. The boroughs ordinances govern a bunch of different topics - everything from animal control and traffic to cable TV and soil movement.

Though most residents are familiar with many of the rules and regulations outlined in the borough code, Patch combed through the town’s online code to pick out five laws you probably didn’t know were on the books in Ramsey.

No person shall keep, harbor or maintain any dog which habitually barks, cries, whines or howls.

2. Separate the ladies and gents rooms, but only if there is alcohol involved!

[1961 Code § 28.06; 1972 Code § 114.025]

On premises where both sexes are served alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, separate toilets and washrooms shall be provided for each sex and such toilets and washrooms shall at all times be maintained in a sanitary condition.

3. Good thing 'Dancing in the Rain' wasn't filed in Ramsey.

[Ord. No. 838 § 2]

In the section entitled “Enumeration of prohibited noises,” you’ll find the following restriction:

Yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling or singing on the public streets, particularly between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., or at any time or place so as to annoy or disturb the quiet, comfort or repose of persons in any office, dwelling or other type of residence or of any persons in the vicinity.

4. Leave those Snapple bottles at home.

[Ord. No. 872 § 1; Ord. No. 1077 § 2; Ord. No. 1117]

No person shall bring to or possess any glass bottle in any parks, recreational facilities, or Green Acres properties owned or under the control of the Borough.

Earlier this year, the borough council actually discussed this ordinance and others related to it when trying to come up with ways to deter parent drinking at athletic events held at Ramsey parks. The town considered posting signs in parks reminding residents that drinking alcoholic beverages in parks is not allowed. However, according to the ordinance, anything that comes in a glass bottle is a no-go.

5. Keep your wagons and wheelbarrows off the sidewalks.

[1961 Code § 7.03; 1972 Code § 93.010]

No person shall ride, drive, lead or propel any wagon, wheel or hand barrow, or other wheeled machine, except children's carriages or vehicles used by a handicapped person, along any sidewalk in the Borough.
