Ramsey Police Captain Recovering After Tree Fell On Him During Sandy

Captain Ray Bailey sustained 'serious' back and neck injuries during the storm, police said

Ramsey Police released information Friday that one of their own, Captain Raymond P. Bailey, is recovering from serious injuries he sustained when a tree fell on him while responding to Hurricane Sandy Monday.

According to Police Chief Bryan Gurney, Bailey was attempting close off Oakridge Road at the intersection of Darlington Avenue when a tree at the northeast corner of the intersection fell on top of him. The accident happened at about 9:21 p.m. Monday, at the height of Hurricane Sandy, police said.

Members of the RPD and Ramsey Rescue Squad rescued Bailey from underneath the tree by using chainsaws to cut him out, Gurney said.

Bailey was transported to an area hospital Monday, where he is being treated for what Gurney called “very serious” back and leg injuries.

“He was doing what we were all doing, braving the storm, and doing the right thing to keep the town safe,” Gurney said. “That’s a testament to the kind of person he is.”

Though Gurney declined to give many specifics on Bailey’s current condition, he did say “it’s going to be a long recovery. But I know Ray, and I know he’ll recover.”

The Ramsey Police Department has been posting call outs on its Facebook page for residents to keep Bailey in their thoughts and prayers.

Bailey is a Ramsey resident and a 26-year member of the Ramsey Police force.
