Ramsey Assists in 'Fully Engulfed' Pool House Fire

Borough's FAST crew responded to the Mahwah fire early Wednesday morning.

A Ramsey FAST crew responded to a pool house in Mahwah that officials say was “totally destroyed,” by a fire early Wednesday morning.

According to Mahwah Fire Chief Ed Garza, the pool house behind a home on Lehman Road was “totally engulfed in flames,” when firefighters arrived on the scene just after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. The structure was “totally destroyed,” he said.

Mahwah police investigators said Wednesday that the fire was likely started by a malfunction in electrical equipment that was being stored in the pool house.

Mahwah Fire Companies 1, 2, 3, and 4, and a FAST crew with eight firefighters and officers from Ramsey responded.

According to Ramsey Fire Chief Randy Sterbinsky, the FAST team responds as back-up in case any firefighters need to be rescued from the scene. Ramsey’s FAST team is one of only five in the 14-member Northwest Mutual Aid Association, Sterbinsky said.

Crews responded to the fire for about two hours, officials said.

The pool house was, “far enough away from the house,” that it did not spread, Garza said. No one was injured in the fire, he said.
