Staff Sgt. Timothy Raymond McGill, 30, of Ramsey, was killed Saturday in eastern Afghanistan in an apparent attack by a member of the Afghan forces, NBC News reported. According to the report, an Afghan wearing a security forces uniform turned his weapon against McGill and two other U.S. soldiers, killing all three of them.

The shooting took place in Gardez, capital of eastern Paktia province, inside a base of the Afghan army in the city, the report said. The area, near the border with Pakistan, has been a front line in fighting with the Taliban and other militants.

According to the report, NATO said the shooting was carried out by a gunman wearing the uniform of the Afghan National Security Forces, but no further details were made available.

McGill was a member of the Ramsey volunteer fire department. Newjersey.news12.com reported that McGill joined the military as a Marine in 2001 and was deployed to Iraq in 2005. He was a member of the Rhode Island National Guard.
