One in Three Deaths from Cardiovascular Disease is Preventable

The good news is that cardiovascular diseases have declined by 29% between 2001 and 2010.  The bad news is that they are still the number one cause of death in the US.

According to a new report from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 800,000 Americans die from cardiovascular disease annually.  That is about one in every three deaths in the US.

Cardiovascular diseases  include heart attacks and stroke. In the US, the most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease , which can lead to a heart attack.

Many of these deaths could be prevented through simple lifestyle changes.  Sixty percent of the preventable heart disease and stroke deaths happen to people under age 65. As reported in a featured USA Today article.

CDC Director Thomas Frieden noted that the findings were "really striking" since we're talking about hundreds of thousands of people dying well before their time each and every year.
