Connecticut School Shooting Memorial Set Up at Ramsey School

Residents are grieving after news of an elementary school shooting in a suburban community less than an hour away

As the country wrestles with an , Ramsey residents were left trying to cope with the tragedy.

A photo submitted to Patch shows an impromptu memorial to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting set up at the Dater School Friday night. The memorial included flowers, stuffed animals, and signs reading “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Newtown” and “Ramsey [loves] Newtown.”

The Ramsey Office of Emergency Management is urging residents to keep their porch and holiday lights on all weekend as a way to remember the victims.

Borough residents also took to social media sites to express their condolences for the Connecticut community less than an hour away from Ramsey.

“The Ramsey PD offers its prayers & condolences to the victims families who lost loved ones at the Sandy Hook Elem. school incident,” the police department posted on Facebook. The Fire Department posted a graphic of a candle with the word “Prayers” across the top on its page.

The Ramsey Office of Emergency Management posted a note on behalf of the borough: “The Borough of Ramsey and the Ramsey, NJ Office of Emergency Management sends our heartfelt condolences to everyone impacted by the devastating tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut today. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and our collective arms are around you.”

The Ramsey Rescue Squad posted a note on the victims and first responders to the scene: “The Ramsey Rescue Squad sends their prayers to those affected by the #Newtown school shooting. There are no words that will be able to comfort those affected or make sense for this horrible act. God Bless the first responders on scene, our thoughts are with you.”
