Class of 2013 Awarded Pre-Graduation Scholarships

Ceremony Monday night recognized a long list of seniors.

Ramsey High School seniors are preparing for the Class of 2013 graduation ceremony Friday.

Earlier this week, students were recognized for their accomplishments over the past four years, and rewarded with a long list of scholarships at a ceremony held at the high school Monday night.

Scholarships were awarded to students based on a range of criteria, including academic, athletic, and extracurricular achievement. Scholarships worth as much as $4,000 were awarded Monday night.

This year, a scholarship in memory of late Ramsey High School Principal Rich Lio, was among the awards given out. Lio died last month.

The $250 scholarship was awarded to two students, Danielle Fowler and Erin C. O’Connor, who were involved with Relay for Life, which Lio helped bring to Ramsey six years ago.

JUDIE BAYLES SPECIAL ENRICHMENT MEMORIAL AWARD is awarded to a graduating senior with untapped potential who considers himself or herself to be highly creative.  The award is presented in memory of Judie Bayles, former Ramsey enrichment teacher.

BERGEN COUNTY SCHOOL COUNSELOR ASSOCIATION AWARD is presented to a student who has maintained a GPA of 3.0 and plans to become a school counselor or teacher upon graduating from college.

THE BRAGGIN STEM AWARD is presented to a student who plans to pursue a degree in a STEM program (science, technology, engineering, and math) at a 4-year college of university.

RALPH CALVANO MEMORIAL AWARD is given in memory of former Industrial Arts Supervisor and teacher, Ralph Calvano, by his family and friends.  This award is given to a student for excellence in Computer Assisted Drafting and Technology Education.

CLASS OF 1959 AWARD is given by the Class of 1959 in recognition of a student's academic standing in the class.

CLASS OF 1990 HISTORY AWARD is given to a senior who has excelled in history at RHS, shows intellectual promise and has a passion for learning.  This award is given by the Class of 1990 in honor of Dr. Robert Cornish, former Department Supervisor, who instilled a love of history in his students.

PATRICIA COWAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a senior who plans to study nursing or another healthcare related profession at a four year college and has shown commitment to family, school, and community.

GRETCHEN DATER MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded to art students who show creative talent and will be continuing their education in the field of art.  This scholarship is given in memory of Gretchen Joyce Dater, Class of 1986, who lost her life in the terrorist bombing of Pan American Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988.

DATER SCHOOL PTO AWARDS are given to seniors who attended Hubbard School Grades 4/5 (due to the switch in buildings) for at least one year and attained high academic achievement.  In addition, each recipient must have contributed to the school and been a community volunteer.

VINNY DELUCA GUARDIAN ANGEL AWARD is given to a graduating senior in memory of Vinny DeLuca, a great man, an exceptional father, and a great friend to those who knew him.  The recipient has been involved in multiple years of extra-curricular activities, has demonstrated a willingness to handle adversity, has led by example, and is an exemplary model to his/her classmates in and out of school.

OFFICER CARL DIETZE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented to a student interested in pursuing a career in the field of law enforcement, firefighting, or the military who exemplify the qualities important to Officer Dietze such as dedication to country, excellent work ethic, perseverance, patience, and compassion.

DRAMA CLUB PERFORMANCE AWARD is given to a senior who has participated in Drama Club activities for four years and has performed in a minor or major capacity in a least two productions.

JOHN J. AND HELEN M. DURANTE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded by the Family Charitable Trust of the Community Foundation of New Jersey to a senior intending to pursue a career in the building industry and who is intending to enroll in courses related to building.

LT. THOMAS EVANS SCHOLARSHIP is given to the male student in the senior class who best exemplifies the characteristics displayed by Lt. Thomas Evans, who was a member of the Class of 1970, when he was a student at Ramsey High School.  The senior shall be an athlete who has demonstrated leadership skills on and off the field of play, has illustrated strong character, and is respected by coaches, peers, and teachers.

Gregory who was killed in the World Trade Center attack September 11, 2001.

DAVID M. MACDONALD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS are given to seniors who have been accepted into a two or four year college or prep school, who have been a member of the Band or Color Guard for four years, and who have maintained a minimum 2.75 grade point average.  The recipients must also be outstanding citizens of the school, have performed community service, and not be receiving scholarships in excess of eighty percent of college tuition and expenses.  The Fine Arts Department of Ramsey High School identifies the recipient.
